Superhero Dream Catcher Afghan, especially for Spiderman Fans

DSuperhero Dreamcatcher Afghan - Especially for Spiderman fans
Copyright 2006 - Gail E and Wendy G

Also, please check You Tube for videos on making the Afghan. That might solve your problems before they become discourging. The pattern has been tested and the testers had no trouble as long as they followed the directions. Wishing you the best!

Please Note: if you have difficulties with the pattern, check the NOTES at the bottom, they may have your answer already.
Thank you! And Happy Hooking!

Each of these afghans have had different numbers of rounds in red and blue. I do not follow a strict rule of how many rounds of each color, nor how many bands of red or blue to make.
They are approximately 53 inches across.

The base pattern for this afghan is found at http://www.angelcrafts.net/ Please take a look at Lyn's original Round Ripple Baby Afghan, it's lovely and is a lovely gift for a baby.

To make a plain Round Ripple, without the web, simply follow Lyn’s pattern or mine, just drop the sc rounds and use whatever colors & band widths suit you and your needs.

Both afghans are under copyright. The patterns are intended for personal and charitable purposes only. The patterns are not to be sold, redistributed or placed into any collection or compilation at all. Publishing the patterns on other websites, mailing lists, in any print media, electronic media (CDs) OR the selling of these patterns, IS ILLEGAL! Sharing the link to our patterns on the web is not only allowable, but encouraged.

However, you may make & sell as many of the afghans as you can get buyers for. If we can make money from our art, I am all for it. Just don't sell your work for too little. Treat it like the work of art it is, whether it's an afghan or a potholder, your expertise and time are worthwhile.

Always remember, crocheting has three functions -
1. Enjoyment as you create a work of art,
2. Gives pleasure to us as we work & to receipents when we give them a crocheted item,
and
3. Keeps us from eating all the time~:o)

Rnd 10: With BLACK: Join with sl st in next st, (ch 1, sc) in same st as join, *1 sc in each stitch to ch-2 space. (1 sc, ch-2, 1 sc) in ch-2 space, 1 sc in each stitch to bottom of “V”, skip 2 stitches. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 dc, sl st into ch 1. Finish off. Weave ends in.

Suggested Color Pattern for Rounds: This is not set in stone, it is a suggestion only and you should follow your own likes so that you make it YOUR afghan~:o)
5 rounds – RED
4 rounds – BLUE
1 round – BLACK
4 rounds – BLUE
1 round – BLACK
4 rounds – RED
1 round – BLACK
5 rounds – RED
1 round – BLACK
6 rounds – RED
3 rounds – BLUE
1 round – BLACK
6 rounds – BLUE

The only thing that should not change, is that there is one round of black because it is the “web” and would not look right if made wider.

The afghan can be made to any size with additional yarn.

NOTE: Continue working in rounds in colors and pattern established, always working 1 round with small shell, and 2 rounds with large shell. Continue repeating rounds 7, 8, 9. Work those three rounds over and over, regardless of the color used for the rounds. That is what keeps the afghan flat as it increases in size. Also, make the afghan as large as you want. The size is not ‘set in stone.’

Pattern for webbing:
To make “ribs” of the web, work from outer edge to middle of afghan.

Attach BLACK yarn in the ch-2 sp at the top of any point. (Ch 3, sl st in ch-2 sp of next round) for all BLUE and RED rounds. (Ch 2, sl st in ch-2 sp) for all BLACK rounds. Finish off.
Repeat 11 times. Weave in ends.

Border: Attach blue yarn in any stitch. *Ch 1, rev sc in ea st around, with (2 rev sc) in ea ch-2 sp. Finish off. Weave in ends.

NOTE: from Round 7 onward, you will work 1 round with small shell, then 2 rounds with large shell. Regardless of color, follow that sequence. Red and blue rounds are always dc, black rounds are always sc.

Wrap and gift to a Spiderman fan and watch their eyes light up~

NOTE: The round count for the colors used were only the number of rounds that were in each color of the afghan pictured above. Each one I have made has a different number of rounds in red and blue, black rounds are always only one round because it represents the web itself.

NOTE:  With a round ripple, the number of stitches from "sk 2 sts" to the "ch2" space, will increase each time you make a Large Shell round.  So on the round after every Large Shell round you will have one more stitch between the bottom of the "sk 2 sts" to the ch2 space".

If you want to knit the afghan, a wonderful lady, Anne, worked the Superhero Dreamcatcher Afghan crochet pattern up in knit, then translated it from Finish to English! So if you are a knitter and want a lighter finished blanket, give her pattern a try.
     http://muro73.googlepages.com/patternsinenglish

And another very kind lady, Ana, has translated the crochet version to Spanish.  You can find this translation at:
    http://hastaelmonyo.com/?p=1375

There are these two videos that might help with this and other problems;

This one has helped others with questions about the vertical ribbing -

And this one seems to be in general work on the afghan -

This blanket completely stole my heart! Let me share a story with you. My 3 year old son "Kaden", was born with a congenital heart defect, known as "Hyplplastic Left Heart Syndrome". Which basically means that his heart was underdeveloped and that he will need 3 stages of open heart surgery to reconstruct his heart so that only the right side will function. He has had 2 surgeries and will be going back on June 7th for the test to prepare him for his last. I recently learned to crochet and absolutely LOVE it!! But have been trying to figure out the right blanket for his hospital stay. One of my friend's referred me to this page and when I scrolled through the pages and saw this pattern it took my breath away. My son loves spiderman and this blanket will be perfect!! I just pray that I am talented enough to make it for him. But I do want to thank you for sharing this pattern, I know this will make his day!!

I love this pattern and i am trying it. i seen comment about the missed black row between row 5 and 6 and i know you can put how many rows of each color u want and one row of black. but after i put the sc black row it says keep doing rows 7,8 and 9 which says start off with slip stitch in the next double crochet but in the black round is all single crochet so how do u start it in next double. any help would be appricated thank u

I really like this blanket and can't wait to make it. I was wondering if you had seen or heard of any easy to intermediate lapghan/blanket patterns with Disney's Cars or Nick Jr.'s Backyardigans. My 5-year-old grandson is nuts about both. thank you very much. Jennifer

No I've not seen those patterns. But my children are middle aged, my grands are grown but no great-grands yet, so I've not really been looking for that sort of pattern. LOL

I am getting ready to start this pattern - is there indeed a missed black row & if there is can you respond to the question about how to start up the next rows after?
Thanks so much.... Angela

This pattern is rather forgiving. There is no missed round of black webbing, I simply did not put one between the red and blue sections. However it is up to each crocheter to decide where and when to put a round of black.

For the black rounds, you may follow in pattern with whichever round is next, either the small shell or large shell round, or just sc in each stitch around, with 2 sc in the ch 2 spaces. Then go back to the next pattern round, either small or large shell.

I have a couple of questions.
First off I am using a size G hook…I went down a size because I didn’t really care for the bigger hole size. However my work is starting to ripple a little bit…I don’t mind if it does a little bit but I was just wondering if this is something that will make it look silly in the end product?
I am getting ready to start my 9th row. And I just want to make sure I was doing this right…I will start back over with row 7 right? I have tried to do it in my mind and it doesn’t seem like it would work out.
Thank you so much for doing this blanket. I showed this to my Gson and he went nuts over it when I asked him if he would like me to make him one like this. I am making it for his Bday and even tho I am nervous about it, I am loving it so far.

Stitch 'n Frog said...

JULZ -- To stop the afghan from rippling, instead of making 1 round of small shell, then 2 rounds of large shells, You need to make 2 rounds of small shell, then 1 round of large shell.

Every couple of rounds, lay the afghan down to make sure it is laying flat. If it begins to Cup, change back to the 1 round small shell, 2 rounds large shell.

I have a question on row 5. It says to DC in a DC then 2DC, 2CH, 2DC in the chain two space, then another DC in the next DC. Exactly what DC are you to stitch in before and after the (2DC, 2ch, 2DC) pattern? Should the first DC in the DC space be after all 4 DC, basically within the space created by the ch 2 yet still within the DC grouping? It just looks a bit weird with the first DC being in the ch2 space but the last DC in the DC grouping. I really hope that this even makes sense.

Stitch 'n Frog said...

I am not 100% sure of what you mean, but will take a stab at it.

With a round ripple afghan, when you "2dc, ch 2, 2dc in the ch 2 space" it looks like you have 2dc, ch2, 3dc in the space because the first dc of the previous round is the little "bump" that extends into the ch 2 space.

I will try to dig out a round ripple and take a close-up photo of one of the peaks, so what I am trying to say is shown. Will post it with the pattern. May take a day or two to find one and get a clear photo, but I'll get it up ASAP.

MPintus said...

Yes, that is exactly what I'm talking about. You are amazing! I was just concerned because it seems a little lopsided with the DC before the "cluster" so close and then the DC after the cluster farther away in the next DC space.

Leeanne Boyd said...

Hello, I am making this for my co-worker's first baby. I really would like to know what brand of yarn you used as I want the colors to be correct.

Stitch 'n Frog said...

Hello Leeanne, I used Red Heart yarns for it. They hold up well to the rough handling and dragging that kids give things. But any bright true-blue and bright true-red would work just fine.

Thanks for asking~

I am not sure how you do the black webbing that is vertical after the blanket is made I am assuming. I think I understand everything else in the pattern! This is such a great afghan and my tomboy niece is going to be excited when she opens her birthday present this year! Thanks for helping me!

Kat said...

I did email this- but then thought maybe someone else ran into this problem and could use the help too, so posted it here:

I'm just starting this pattern and have stopped on the first black row: "Rnd 10: With BLACK: Join with sl st in next st, (ch 1, sc) in same st as join, *1 sc in each stitch to ch-2 space. (1 sc, ch-2, 1 sc) in ch-2 space, 1 sc in each stitch to bottom of “V”, skip 2 stitches. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 dc, sl st into ch 1. Finish off. Weave ends in."

In particular, I'm having problems with : 1 sc in each stitch to bottom of "V", skip 2 stitches. No matter what I'm doing, when I drop to the bottom of the V it sort of pinches the pattern... which I assume is supposed to happen in order to create the web effect, the problem comes in the skipping 2, when I do that, the blanket sort of 'shrivels, and when I move to the next round, my small shells are offset.

Can you think what I may be doing wrong? Or is it possible to show a picture of how to do it right?

Thank you very much for your help and for the free pattern!,

Stitch 'n Frog said...

By skipping the 2 bottom stitches of each “V” the afghan will of course be drawn up a bit.

Many people don’t realize that the first stitch after making the shell is actually into the little bump that extends into the ch2 space, and their count is off due to that.

Also make sure that you attach the yarn as specified, so that the pattern will read correctly.

Still working on my blanket. I'm getting a little worried that it is starting to bunch in the middle a bit. i'm on row 23 - red. will it start to lay flatter the bigger it gets? i think i might have tightend a black row too much which caused it to bunch up a little

Unknown said...

hello, first of all, i want to say thank you for the pattern. i am 1/2 done making it and i need to know how to do the black web afterwards, is it sewn on with a tapestry needle?
thanks again, i am making this for my grandson.

When I slipstitch the end of a round, then slipstitch in the next stitch and chain 3 I always get a space between the ch3 and dc to start the next round. I'm I doing something wrong??

jniharris2 said...

I made the blanket in just over a week, but can't seem to understand how to do the ribs of the web. I can get started, but they don't look as straight as they should, then when I get to the center of the blanket, I don't know how to finish it off to make it look professional. I sure would appreciate either a video or a photo tutorial. I've looked all over the web for help, but can't find any. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Unknown said...

I love this afghan..and once I got started (and figured it out) it is super fun to crochet! Do you have a Facebook page for this pattern. I would love to see pics of other peoples projects and how they turned out, compare notes, ask questions etc. I'm finding that my holes for skip 2 at the bottom of the v don't look that great (i'm sure it's just a problem with my crocheting..and not the pattern) but I would love to find out how others tackled this problem. I am starting in the little bump (which I learned to do from watching a Crochet Crowd video on youtube) so I think my problem may just be tension or something. Anyway, I would love to follow you on FB and get advice from you and others. LOVE LOVE LOVE this pattern!

When Im putting the blue on the black row Ive lost my "chain 2" space. do I put it in the stitch of the sc? If I go into the red ch 2 space it covers my black. Will it matter overall to the finished blanket? I went to the Mikey video but it is different than this pattern. Help plz?

Argh, would be good to put a note in at the beginning about the missed black round between the first lot of red and blue as the picture shows a round there so I assumed it would be added after, I've now gone too far to unravel so it's not going to be how I wanted it. Hopefully it will still turn out great! Thanks for the pattern..

I can't seem to find a print friendly version of this pattern. I absolutely love it and would love to give it a try!!

Mine is in the works. It wasn't laying flat so I pulled it lose and started over. Right from the start I was wrong w/ the # of sp. This is a very easy and quick pattern, after I figured it out. Which wasn't that hard either. The join, fasten off slip stich new yarn chain three does seem a bit over kll. I have played w/ join then change colors. I leave out the fasten off and weave. My next round I think I will weave lose yarn w/ next few stitches and see how it looks. I did this w/ the starter circle. Should of used magic circle. I find some crocheters to stay w/ what they learned or do things different from my way most the time u can adapt your style to fit many situations. If not pull it lose and nothing is lost. I too would like to hear the authers view on her joining method and if she still does it this way after all these years. Great pattern

I realize that nobody has been on here since January, but if someone could please lead me to the print friendly version for THIS pattern and NOT the throw that keeps popping up every time I try to print this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much!

Probably a silly question but is it really just one skein each color?

SaraAnn said...

Yeepp.. problem with row 11 which is actually row 7 again after you do the black single crochet web. there's too many stitches so repeating round 7 does not work. Poo

SaraAnn said...

..and another thing which doesn't make sense is one of the notes: "sk 2 sts" to the "ch2" space, will increase.."
within the pattern there are not any instructions to 'Skip 2 stitches to the chain 2 space'.
There's 'Skip 2 stitches then slip stitch to join' at the end of each round or Skip 2 stitches at the bottom of the V. :/

Re: Rnd '11', which is Repeat Rnd 7, people claim there are too many stitches created by the 1 Rnd of black SC.
I'm assuming the pattern is written as ppl should already understand that you increase the amount of stitches between each cluster accordingly and to NOT follow Ends 7,8,9 or verbatim or it won't work.

Idk.. but honestly the pattern is just a wee confusing and could use more detail within the pattern itself and not in notes for better clarification.
I believe future triers of this pattern should follow another Round Ripple Blanket pattern but use the amount of colors per round indicated in this pattern and the technique for the vertical ribbing.

I wish I would have seen this recommendation sooner, because I only have one more row to go before doing my vertical black rows, and I have a big cup. His birthday is Sunday. No time to redo it. My daughter reassured me he won’t care, but I am frustrated. He’s three so he probably won’t notice or care, just me.

Awesome pattern! The comments in the thread definitely helped me get the ribbing right on the first go. Just a quick question. I know there are several ways to finish the ribbing whether its going to the center or stopping at the final row of black, i went to the center and would like to cover it with a fleece spider. Any suggestions on how i do this to make sure its secure enough to outlast a 10 year old boy?

I made this a few years ago for my grandson. He loved it too much and it has fallen apart. It got washed a LOT! He wants a new one but I'm wondering if doing it in SC instead of DC would be sturdier and how to convert it. Is there a SC pattern out there for this same blanket?

Norco contains a blend of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is an opiate exacerbation solution. An opiate is sometimes called a narcotic. Acetaminophen is a less solid pain reliever that extends the effects of hydrocodone. Norco is used to reduce moderate to decently outrageous desolation.

Good heavens there seems to be a lot of spam here, lol! Just wanted to give an actual comment and thank you for this pattern. I have ordered the yarn to make this as a gift for my 16 year old niece! She is going to be stoked! : )
